Blockchain-based Metaverse and Web3 platforms have decided to form the Open Metaverse Alliance for Web3 (OMA3) to overcome industry interoperability challenges. The four core principles of the alliance are said to be transparency, inclusiveness, decentralization and democracy.

The joint organization was created by Alien Worlds, Animoca Brands, Dapper Labs, Space, Superworld, The Sandbox (SAND), Upland and Voxels. As the official announcement outlines, the means for overcoming interoperability challenges will focus on proposing standards and facilitating collaboration between various stakeholders in Web3 and other industries.

OMA3 will be established as a Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) to ensure a “transparent and user-centric” governance system. It will focus its efforts on specific metaverse-related topics, such as standards for non-fungible tokens (NFTs), protocols, transferable identity, portals between virtual worlds, mapping and cataloging.

Alliance members intend to join the recently announced Metaverse Standards Forum – a constellation of Web3 companies, coordinating requirements, supporting existing standards and developing standards relevant to the Metaverse.

Sandbox co-founder Sebastien Bourget provided an example of a digital avatar to illustrate the issues OMA3 will work on:

“We want your avatar to be more than just a virtual representation, and also carry your reputation where anyone can see on your chain of NFTs you own, acquired, created or purchased, complete history of transactions, and hopefully also your progress/actions that have contributed to it throughout” .
The announcement promises to reveal more details about the OMA3 chart during the NFT World Summit in London on Friday.
